Sony Says PS5 Deficit Will Continue in 2022

Sony said the PlayStation 5 shortage is unlikely to end this year. It is highly likely that it will continue into 2022. Sony has already sold 7.8 million consoles (figures are current at the end of March). By the end of this fiscal year, the company plans to sell about 15 million PlayStation 5.

But demand is still higher than supply. Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki says:

“It is unlikely that demand will decline this year. It is so big that even if we can produce more set-top boxes and put them in stores, they will still be quickly snapped up. We simply will not be able to keep up with demand, both this year and next.

We sold over 100 million PlayStation 4. The console was hugely popular. The PlayStation 5 is also of interest to millions of gamers. So, I am sure that the players’ desire to buy a console will be higher than our production capabilities.”

When the deficit of the PlayStation 5 ends, Mr. Totoki did not say.
